About Brewster

Distance to NYC: 45 Miles

Brewster is a village located in the Town of Southeast in Putnam County.  The town of Southeast surrounds the independent and separately governed 134-acre Village of Brewster. Although the town of Southeast is the larger municipality, the area is commonly referred to as "Brewster", the name recognized by the post office and designated as zip code 10509.  The town still maintains much of its 19th century character with three of its prominent buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Southeast is located at the crossroads of Route 684 and Route 84. Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line has two stops that service the area at Brewster Village and Southeast Station.

History
The first settler arrived around 1730. The Town of Southeast was founded in 1788, and formed the southeast corner of Dutchess County, New York whose northeast corner was the township of North East, New York. Its most densely populated area in the town is the Village of Brewster, New York.  The name comes from Walter and James Brewster, farmers who owned land where the village is located.

Schools and Educational Facilities
The Brewster Central School District serves the village of Brewster. Public schools in the district include JFK Elementary, Garden Street Elementary, C. V. Starr Intermediate School, H.H. Wells Middle School and Brewster High School, and one private school, the Melrose School.
